Anesthesia, like other medical sciences, took some time to develop into its current form. The American dentist William Thomas Green Morton is credited with being the first to use ether as an anesthetic in surgery in 1846. Prior to that, medical specialists used cannabis, opium, and other natural substances to relieve pain, while some employed hypnosis, and the Chinese used acupuncture alongside other ineffective techniques.
In rare cases, surgeries were performed on patients who had to be restrained on the operating table until the procedure was completed; many of these operations led to the patient’s death. Therefore, the emergence of the field of anesthesia played a significant and crucial role in the medical field. In this article, we will discuss everything related to anesthesia and its study in Turkey, which is one of the leading countries in this field and possesses internationally accredited universities, as well as specialized medical institutions.

What is the Anesthesia Program?
Anesthesia is a specialty that includes a series of medical applications developed to ensure that the patient does not feel pain, can tolerate medical interventions, does not remember the surgical procedure and its aftermath, and is made comfortable during the surgery, including both pre-and post-surgery stages. The anesthesia program, an essential part of surgical sciences, aims to graduate anesthesia specialists who are responsible for preparing the environment, using, maintaining, and keeping equipment, preparing the operating room, resuscitation, and handling emergencies. The specialist should possess knowledge and skills to work in a medical environment, stay updated on the latest developments in the field, and apply them in practice. They must also be aware of the environmental, social, and ethical issues related to their profession and responsibilities, while considering health and safety measures in their work. The program aims to train anesthesia technicians who can perform these tasks.
The medical specialty in anesthesia has many practical applications, as providing surgical care to patients is the primary goal of anesthesia. The dosage, duration of anesthesia, and its effects on the patient’s organs are all part of the anesthesia plans that anesthesiologists prepare for their patients. Due to their importance in every surgical treatment, anesthesiologists are in high demand.
Types of Anesthesia
There are four basic types of general anesthesia used during surgery and other surgical procedures. These types are distinguished based on the type of surgery, its duration, and its location in the human body. The types are classified globally as follows:
- General Anesthesia: This is referred to as the “sleeping” patient in medical terms, where the patient does not feel pain stimuli and their muscles are relaxed.
- Local Anesthesia: Administered via an injection of a local anesthetic, it numbs a small area of the body where the surgery is being performed, commonly used in dental treatments and minor cosmetic surgeries.
- Regional Anesthesia: The patient loses sensation in a specific region of their body, and the muscles in that area are relaxed. The most common and widely known type of this anesthesia is epidural anesthesia, which affects only the lower part of the body.
Importance of Anesthesia Specialty
Today, the anesthesia specialty goes beyond simply preventing or managing joint pain during surgery. Anesthesia specialists also help patients prepare for procedures, recommend necessary tests, and create an integrated pre-surgery plan that manages or avoids medications to help the patient prepare for anesthesia properly. In addition to managing pain during surgery, anesthesiologists are responsible for ensuring the patient’s oxygen supply, monitoring their breathing and circulation, and overseeing other vital body functions. After the surgery, the anesthesiologist continues to care for the patient in the recovery area or the intensive care unit until their condition stabilizes in the operating room.
Studying Anesthesia Specialty in Turkey
Anesthesia is one of the fields that Turkey places great emphasis on, as the country’s overall focus on the healthcare sector requires continuous development and monitoring of health specialties. The anesthesia diploma is one of the most desired specialties among students. During this program, students learn how to anesthetize patients and monitor their condition before and during surgery. Graduates of the anesthesia diploma are called anesthesia technicians, while a specialist in anesthesia is a physician who studied general medicine and then specialized in anesthesia.
Turkish universities and institutions offer basic academic programs, including a preparatory year for learning Turkish and English, along with the basics of anesthesia, such as equipment use and medication handling. In addition, at the end of each year, students participate in practical training.

Career Paths for Anesthesia Graduates in Turkey
Upon completing the anesthesia specialty, students receive a two-year anesthesia diploma. However, a student who studies general medicine for 6 years and then specializes in anesthesia becomes an anesthesiologist. If they study at an institute, they graduate as an anesthesia technician or specialist. The career paths for anesthesia diploma graduates include the following:
1- Anesthesia Assistant
An anesthesia assistant is a qualified individual who works directly under the supervision of a licensed anesthesiologist and helps in carrying out anesthetic treatment plans. The roles and responsibilities may vary depending on the healthcare setting.
