In July 2001, based on a proposal by the then Mayor of Izmir, Ahmet Piriştina, the Grand Plaza Hotel in Balçova was included in the university and became its main campus.

The university started its academic life and opened its doors to students in October 2001. It was the first private foundation university in Izmir and the Aegean region. The Izmir University of Economics aims to nurture creative individuals by providing a different approach to understanding and practising education in Turkey while adhering to the principles of Atatürk.

The university also obtained the “Institutional Accreditation” from the Turkish Higher Education Quality Council (THEQC). The Izmir University of Economics has accredited 14 departments, and it is among the few higher education institutions that have successfully passed the examination in various areas such as education, research and development, social contribution, leadership, and management systems.
